Emergency Care

What to do in an emergency

In a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest ER. Your Medicaid coverage includes emergency care.

Call 911 for emergencies

For any life-threatening situation — chest pain, trouble breathing, serious injury — call 911 immediately. Do not wait to arrange a ride.

ERs must treat you

Federal law (EMTALA) requires hospital emergency rooms to screen and stabilize you regardless of insurance or ability to pay. Show your Medicaid card when you arrive.

No prior authorization needed

Emergency care does not require advance approval (prior authorization) from your MCO. You can go directly to the ER.

NEMT is not for emergencies

The free Medicaid ride program (NEMT) is for scheduled, non-emergency appointments only. Always call 911 for a medical emergency. Learn about NEMT

If you are admitted

Contact your MCO’s member services as soon as possible after an emergency admission. The member services number is on the back of your Medicaid card.

Follow up after the ER

Schedule a follow-up visit with your primary care provider after an ER visit. Your PCP can coordinate ongoing care and help avoid repeat emergencies.

Tip: Keep your Medicaid card and your MCO’s member services number saved in your phone.
