Keep Your Coverage

How to avoid losing Medicaid

Most coverage gaps are preventable. Here are the most common reasons people lose Medicaid — and how to avoid each one.

1) Respond to your renewal notice

Medicaid requires an annual renewal. You’ll get a packet by mail or in kynect. If you don’t respond by the deadline, your coverage ends — even if you still qualify. Renewal guide

2) Keep your address current

If your address is outdated, renewal notices go to the wrong place and you miss the deadline without knowing it. Update your address in kynect or by calling DCBS any time you move.

3) Keep your phone number current

DCBS and your MCO may call or text you about your case. An out-of-date number means you miss these contacts and may lose coverage without warning.

4) Report income changes promptly

If your income goes up significantly, report it right away. Waiting until renewal can create a large overpayment problem. Changes can be reported at kynect.ky.gov.

5) Respond to document requests fast

If DCBS asks for proof of income, ID, or other documents, you typically have 10–30 days to respond. Missing the deadline can pause or end your coverage. Check your kynect messages regularly.

6) If you lose coverage, act quickly

There is often a short reinstatement window after coverage ends. Contact DCBS at 855-306-8959 as soon as possible. If the window has passed, you can reapply through kynect.

Tip: Set a phone reminder for your renewal month. Use the renewal reminder tool to find out when your renewal is due.
